Thanks and Goodbye

12 Oct

I’m out. I’ve written this column/blog for the last 2 years and it’s time to stop. I don’t know why, it just is.  The last few things I’ve written have felt forced. That’s not good.

I’ve enjoyed the time, the sharing, the ideas, and the inspiration. The truth is I’m on to what’s next. There are new responsibilities, new things to do, and my attention is elsewhere.

I’m always here to kick around ideas, and my blog will certainly stay up, but the weekly column is done.

Thanks again for reading; it was appreciated more than you’ll ever know.

Your Idea is Dead

25 May

Poof. You wrote it down, you bought into it, you even thought of ways to make it better, but in the end, it’s D.O.A.  Too many times we are inspired by ideas; write them down, only to never let them off the page and into action.

“Oh yeah, that’s a great idea…I should start doing that.”

Except we don’t.

Seeing it through is not the same as believing it through. Imaging how you get something done and what the end result looks like, is different from believing what the end looks like.  You have to believe the results are going to be there, so it can motivate you to plow through all the crap it’s going to take to get there.

If the idea was worthy enough to write down, then it’s worthy enough to be discussed.

it = idea

Have it, write it, share it, discuss it, and then do it.

The Modern Mom

18 May

Earlier this month Nielsen released some data about the “Modern Mom”.  34% of American households have kids under 18; here are some highlights from the study.

Moms with kids under 18 like to socialize.

  • 19% more likely than general population to engage on social networks
  • 31% more likely to follow a brand
  • 24% more likely to follow or become a fan of a celebrity

This is an interesting stat; Moms account for 25% of all video streams occurring on social networks, and are also more likely to post their own content.

What content?

  • 37% more likely to post Photos
  • 25% more likely to post Links/Articles/Videos
  • 33% more likely to post Status Updates

The study goes on to share insights about shopping habits and the amount of time moms spend watching reality TV.

Marketing with Social Media

9 Jul

How do we get people to talk about who we are, what we stand for, and subsequently recommend us to a friend?

I had an idea.

Today these interactions are happening within social media, Facebook in particular.  So I wondered how I could create conversations among those people who are fans of the radio station.  What would motivate someone to tell a friend about us and with luck grow the size of the audience?

So here’s the idea we launched this week.  Using Facebook and our website to spread the word we are asking fans to replace their profile picture on Facebook with a KGSR logo.  Share their passion for the station by grabbing 1 of 15 different versions of our logo and flying it for a week on their wall.  Monday through Friday of next week we’ll look at our list of fans and pick a person each day to win 50 bucks.  KGSR…What’s Your Color?

The goal is not to go from 1,500 fans to 5,000.  This isn’t really about attracting people to the Fan Page. Social Media is arguably not scalable.  The danger being the larger the group, the less interaction, the less connected fans will feel.  The goal is to create conversations, for friends to ask fans why they changed their picture.  For others to notice in their news feed that of the 10 people that changed their profile picture 3 of them are KGSR logos.  We want to give current fans a reason to share their thoughts and opinions about us and reward them for doing so.

It’s like walking into a room of people, dropping off cake and ice cream, and walking out.  Suddenly people are eating, conversing, talking about baking, dieting, or gluten free products.  The point is until the cake was dropped off the conversation was about something else.

No doubt many of you have executed cool social media contests or marketing campaigns before. Share your ideas here.  I’ve created a reason for you to discuss, consider this the cake. Let’s hear what you got.
